Beating the Flab Series

Welcome back to our Beating the Flab series! Last week, we took a breather by looking at healthy comfort food. But, it is back to the workout grind this week as we explore fitness solutions. So, be prepared to stretch those muscles and loosen those joints as we run through these exciting new health possibilities.

Traditionally, the mere mention of the word fitness conjures up notions of overpriced gym membership and being chained to a money sucking trainer. But with people now revelling in the effects of an unhealthy economy, many are turning their backs to such expensive fitness options.

On top of that, people are also struggling to find the time to exercise. Faced with longer working hours, many are facing a greater work life imbalance in a bid to hold on their draining jobs. And that’s not all! Let’s not forget that our increasingly busy lifestyle means that it is a delicate juggling act of life’s obligations.

But, it is not all doom and gloom. Now, there is a cheap and efficient way to get back to the peak of fitness. With just a laptop and an internet connection, anyone will be able to work out quite a sweat with the tons of fitness workout series!

So, let’s start by introducing one of the most popular fitness series Insanity Workout!

Featuring American fitness trainer Shaun T, Insanity Workout was released in 2009 by renowned fitness company Beachbody. Termed by research analyst Cindy Walters as a fitness programme “designed especially for people who are serious about getting into the best shape of their lives once and for all”, the S$170 Insanity Workout comes complete with a nutrition guide, 60 day workout calendar and online support. Providing a gym quality workout, the 10 disc cardiovascular (cardio) training regime promises to deliver visible results in just 60 days.

So, how does it deliver on that promise?

By emphasizing on “max interval training”, Insanity Workout ensures that the individual’s body is working at maximum capacity for the entire session. Through the reversal of old-schooled interval training, the weekly six workout sessions consist of a three to four minutes period of strenuous exercise followed by a 30 seconds rest. The cycle is then repeated for the full 30 to 60 minute duration of each exercise session.

There is no fear of faltering in this fitness plan as users will be engaged in a variety of different exercises designed to ensure a complete body workout. Furthermore, these body specific exercises are delivered by the drill sergeant-esque Shaun T. His irresistible brand of tough love motivation serves to inspire participants to push themselves harder.

Through this, Insanity Workout delivers an intense workout that claims to burn up to 1,000 calories. This is in line with Martin Gibala and Sean McGee’s research finding that short vigourous workouts can bring about surprising strong health benefits.

However, Insanity Workout is not the only fitness series that follows the above fitness mantra.

7-Minute Workout
First brought into the limelight by the New York Times, the 7-minute workout is a high intensity interval training workout which comprised of 12 simple exercises. With virtually no overhead cost, director of Exercise Physiology at the Human Performance Institute Chris Jordan states that the workout “provides many of the fitness benefits of prolonged endurance training but in much less time”. This is based on an article he co-wrote with performance coach Brett Klika in the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health & Fitness Journal.

In between a fat-burning and cardio regime, the 7-minute workout works by participants undertaking a rapid succession of the 12 exercises. Each exercise is attempted vigourously for a 30 second period before following it up with a 10 second rest.

It is also important to follow the stated exercise order as the different exercises not only ensures a upper and lower body workout, but also gives the body enough time to let the fatigued muscle recover. This exercise combination allows all the right muscles to be worked.

However even though it is advertised as a 7-minute workout, it is recommended to do at least two to three repetitions of the workout. Therefore, the participant is able to experience metabolic improvements and weight loss.

Parting Words
It is important to note that there is no quick fix to fitness. While we have shown the various quick and low cost fitness solutions, it is up to you to commit yourself to an exercise and dieting regime for results. Set up a personal fitness goal and workout with friends to stay motivated! Alternately, you can also keep an online fitness diary to strengthen your commitment to fitness.

Most importantly, it is essential to always check with your doctor before embarking on a new workout. As each individual’s body has a unique history, a family doctor will be best placed to advise you on the scale of workout you should undertake.

Here’s to a fitter, healthier you!
