Kids from ages seven and above enjoyed flippa ball with former Singapore National Water Polo player, Toh Zhi Hong, organised by FINS Swim School during the SAFRA Open House weekend in July. So, what is flippa ball and why does it involve a National Water Polo player?
Flippa ball is a simplified version of water polo that introduces the sport to kids. At FINS, even absolute beginners can join these flippa ball sessions as they are taught through an enjoyable, interactive programme that encourages kids to pursue the sport. Classes are designed to develop water confidence, build teamwork skills and be a bit of fun too! Learning flippa ball provides a good foundation for water polo, should they decide to pursue the sport in the future.
Under the capable hands of Coach Zhi Hong, flippa ball is taught in a wading pool of 1m in depth - perfect for kids with little or no swimming abilities. The former National Water Polo player, who has been a water polo player since 2003, was part of the winning team at the 27th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2013. "It is a good way to maintain interest in water sports and most importantly, what we want to do is to get them to improve and progress to water polo", explained Coach Zhi Hong. His primary focus will be helping the kids to master the most basic form of water polo, which will enable them to build water confidence, hone ball skills as well as train them to work as a team in a fun environment.
Water polo was first introduced to Singapore in the early twenties and has increasingly gained popularity over the years, with more schools offering the sport as a co-curricular activity (CCA) for students. It is also the only sport that has retained the longest winning streak at the SEA Games dating back to 1965. Flippa ball is a good starting point if parents are looking to expose their young ones to other water based activities or perhaps looking to groom the next water polo champion! Ultimately, flippa ball is fun, exciting and easy to pick up by both boys and girls alike.
Look out for the upcoming flippa ball classes organised for kids between 7 and 12 years old by FINS Swim School at SAFRA Mount Faber and SAFRA Yishun. For more FINS programmes, check out FINS Swim School page.
